If you think you need extra help and support at school, you should follow these steps.
This process is called the SEN Support Cycle - it involves assessing, planning, doing and reviewing.
Step 1
Ask to meet the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) at your school. You can discuss with them the support you need.
The school or college may also suggest some assessments take place to understand your needs better.
Step 2
The SENCo or Learning Support team arranges extra help for you at school or college.
Examples of extra help:
- A time-out card
- Instructions broken down into smaller steps
- Small group work with staff
Step 3
The extra help you receive needs to be reviewed every term. This is usually done by meeting with you and your parents or carer. The meeting checks whether the extra help you've been given has worked or made a difference.
Another review date should be set after this meeting.
Step 4
If you and the school agree that progress has been made, then the extra help you get may continue.
If no or little progress has been made, you can all discuss changing the extra help. Your school may need to speak to other professionals about other ways to to help you.
